THE PATH Research INstituteThe science of the Patterns of Adapting to Health (PATH) is at the forefront of a new understanding of the relationship between the behavior of individuals and the health of populations.
When you know a person's pattern of behavior around health, you know a lot about their risk of disease, their need for health care services, their fitness, whether or not they follow a healthy or unhealthy diet, and much more. Discovered in the late 1990′s and known only by hospital and health plan executives for over 30 years, the behavior of individuals around health is drawn to conform to a small number of patterns. |
Our MissionTo improve individual and population health by helping health care organizations, health insurers, employers, and governments tailor policies and interventions to better meet the needs of people and patients through improved understanding of how their everyday actions, habits, and preferences around health follow systematic patterns that influence health outcomes and the care experience.

What We've Achieved
- Validated the reliability and predictive validity of the Patterns of Adapting to Health (PATH) over a 30 year track record and a quarter-million adults
- Validated the reliability of the PATH over time, across populations, and across geographic regions of the US.
- Validated predictive relationships between the PATH and Life Stage (e.g., age, gender, marital status, children, household make-up)
- Validated the link between medical costs and adult's dominant PATH
- Proved the impact of the PATH on individual health and health care demand.
- Linked disease risk to an individual’s dominant PATH
- Tied physical and mental health differences to the influence of the PATH
- Validated the impact of the PATH on demand for physician care and prescription medications
- Revealed the impact of the Patterns of Adapting to Health (PATH) on each individual giving him or her the ability, for the first time, to break free of their influence!
What are the Patterns of Adapting to Health (PATH)?
The Patterns of Adapting to Health (PATH) are a system of well-defined quantifiable patterns that shape the expression of goal-directed actions, behaviors, beliefs, and attitudes of individuals and populations as they respond to heath issues. Adults unknowingly follow these patterns, occasionally move between them, and as they do their health is impacted in unknown yet predictable ways.
Why are the PATH important?
The good news is that the Patterns of Adapting to Health (PATH) draw some people to optimum health and relative freedom from illness pretty much throughout their lifespan.
The bad news is the majority of adults are shaped by the Patterns of Adapting to Health (PATH) in ways the do not lead to optimum levels of health, but higher risk of illness and greater need for health care.
The Patterns of Adapting to Health (PATH) exert a powerful influence on people as they respond to all things health-related. In fact, the health of adults in the U.S. today can be partly attributed to the influence of the PATH over the past 30 years.
